Ben Hume Paton

British director Ben Hume-Paton has an impressive portfolio of work to his credit, including his latest 360 film for Burberry, as well as spots for Betfair, Nike, Lipitor, Honda, Clairol, Dove, E45, and Veet for Havas New York.

A winner of the Fuji Film Scholarship, Hume-Paton left university with a degree in graphic design and started out directing music videos. Setting up production companies IDP and then SOMA, which he fondly calls ‘boot camp’; this developed his knowledge of filmmaking. In 2007 while working for UK fashion brand NEXT on their catwalk fashion shows, Hume-Paton pitched and won the creative assignment to make their first commercial in 15 years. It was such a success that NEXT asked him to write and direct many of their follow-up campaigns.

2013 saw Ben’s first foray into drama, completing the TV Mini-Series ‘5-A-Side’, a 50 min comedy drama which garnered over 4 million hits on YouTube and looks to be re-commissioned in 2017. In addition to his commercials and music video projects, Ben has also been active in television. Most notably for the BBC’s award-winning motoring show “Top Gear” and more recently the highly acclaimed documentary ‘TT Legends’ for ITV, a behind the scenes look at the trials and tribulations of a motorcycle racing team. He also directed and edited an aviation programme entitled “Jetstream” for Discovery Europe voiced by the current Sherlock; Benedict Cumberbatch.

Over a period of 4 years, Ben was also Creative Director at Gaucho Productions where he was involved in writing, directing and producing a combination of PR, Marketing and social media campaigns for the likes of Suzuki, Pfizer, Hitachi, Yahoo, Microsoft and Jaguar Landrover. Most notably the pan-European art project for Honda, which culminated in the month long exhibition in Berlin by world renowned artist Ryoji Ikeda titled “Dataanatomy”

Ben credits a combination of travel, fashion, architecture and graphic design as his major influences in his filmmaking. “For me, directing incorporates all the things I am interested in. It’s about looking around you, getting inspired, creating and making things. I love the constant stimulation. Ultimately, this allows me to approach any given project with a unique and personal vision.” Happy to pick a up a camera and shoot guerrilla or command a large size crew, Ben draws on his varied career to create a great product whether it be commercial, branded content, documentary or film. “It doesn’t matter what I’m creating as long as you're engaged and entertained - then I have succeeded in my job, and that brings a smile to my face."
